HUDGENS: statement regarding passing of former Insurance Commissioner Johnnie Caldwell
"I was very sad to learn about Johnnie’s passing," said Commissioner Hudgens. "He was a dedicated public servant, who was committed to consumer protection and guided the Insurance Department for four terms."
A native of Taylor County, Ga., Caldwell served as a staff sergeant in the Army during World War II. He was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1954 and served there for 16 years before he was elected Comptroller General and Insurance Commissioner in 1970. Caldwell twice served as president of National Association of Insurance Commissioners. In August of 1985, Caldwell resigned his office to spend more time with his family. He will be greatly missed."

HUDGENS: Statement On Contract Negotiations Between Blue Cross Blue Shield and Grady Hospital
Thank you for your inquiries regarding the inability of Grady Hospital and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia to reach an agreement on the extension of their contract. While I understand the concerns of the consumers and advocacy groups who have contacted my office, Georgia law does not grant my office the authority to approve or disapprove negotiated reimbursement rates between health insurers and hospitals.
Although I have no direct authority in these negotiations, members of my staff continue to monitor the situation. I believe that it is in the best interest of Georgia consumers for Grady Hospital and Blue Cross Blue Shield to resume their contractual relationship, and I encourage both sides to work towards that end.
