Since 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has sponsored Fire Prevention Week. 2008's Fire Prevention Week is October 5 – 11, and the theme is "It's Fire Prevention Week: Prevent Home fires"
To encourage observance of Fire Prevention Week, Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Oxendine in conjunction with State Fire Marshal's Office sponsors activities that support fire safety and prevention. Each year a statewide poster, fire safety tips calendar poster and two fire safety essay contests are conducted for Georgia students. The poster and fire safety tips calendar contests are designed for grades k-5; the fire safety house essay contest is designed for grades K-3. The fire safety essay contest is geared to grades 6-12. Additionally, Commissioner Oxendine and the State Fire Marshal urge schools and communities to participate in the annual statewide fire drill scheduled for Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. for those schools that are able to participate on this day. If inclement weather, please reschedule the drill for the following Wednesday, October 15, 2008.
If your school's schedule conflicts with the dates above, please conduct your fire drill anytime during the month of October.
Fire Prevention Week observances also include the annual Life, Fire, and Safety Awards Luncheon.
The 2007 sponsors are, the Office of the Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner,
along with the Georgia Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers,
the Georgia Burglar and Fire Alarm Association, the Georgia Fire Sprinkler Association,
the Southeastern Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, Georgia Fire Inspectors Association and the Georgia Insurance Information Service.
The Statewide Fire Safety Poster and Calendar Poster Contests are offered to Georgia students in grades K through 5 by using the NFPA Fire Prevention Week
theme in their poster, and the poster should focus on fire prevention in the home. The theme for 2008 Fire Prevention Week was "It's Fire Prevention Week: Prevent Home Fires".
A panel of judges (chosen by the State Fire Marshal's Office) selects from each grade level, K-5, a first, second and third place poster winner and 13 winners for the Fire Safety Tips calendar.
